TECHNOLOGY
What is the Quadrofoil Q2
Quadrofoil is a two-person electric powered hydrofoiling watercraft with a patented hydrofoil steering system that enables a simultaneous control of all four foils and the electric motor. The watercraft operates very quietly, doesn’t produce any waves or emissions. It comes in two models – Q2S and Q2A, each with their own performance characteristics and set of optimal equipment.
Hydrofoiling? What are hydrofoils?
A hydrofoil is a wing-like structure attached to the hull of a boat that raises complete boat out of the water when the boat is moving forward. This technology has been around for a while and takes form in many variations, such as V-foil, T-foil as well as Quadrofoil’s very own version of the C-foils. As a hydrofoil-equipped watercraft (also hydrofoil) increases in speed, the hydrofoil wings below the hull develop enough lift to raise the hull up and out of the water.
What are the benefits of hydrofoils?
This results in a great reduction in drag and a further corresponding increase in speed, energy efficiency and energy consumption. The hydrofoil technology also delivers additional excitement and pleasure of flying above the water. Driving characteristics and feeling is different than with other traditional watercrafts; 21 knots cruising speed feels like double what it actually is, due to the sensation of flying above the water.
What are your hydrofoils made of?
The prototypes were made from carbon fiber. For the production version, partnered with IMPOL, we have developed a special kind of custom aluminum for our hydrofoils, which is super strong, extra light and has a high corrosion resistance.
Has Quadrofoil invented the hydrofoil technology?
No. This technology has been around for a while and takes form in many variations, such as V-foil, T-foil as well as the C-foil shape, which we customized to fit the design and performance of the Q2.
Why is the Q2 innovative? What didn't exist before?
Currently, there is no similar vessel in the aspects of technological solutions and the way of driving in the market. Vessels with hydrofoils have been around for a long time. But their maneuverability was rather limited. Quadrofoil solved these problems with an electric drive and patented steering technology that enables stability and agility at the same time. This way we created a new way of boating that differs Quadrofoil from other hydrofoils.
Q2 – BASIC INFO
What kind of batteries do you use?
The Q2 is powered by two industry standard lithium-ion batteries with an integrated battery management system, which is designed to give you optimum power from the beginning to the end. Batteries can be easily charged using your standard 110V or 220V socket and a special charger provided by Quadrofoil.
What is the lifetime of the batteries?
The battery lifespan is between 500 - 1000 cycles, but is highly affected by driving conditions, weather conditions and most importantly driving style. By pushing the Q2 to its limits, the battery lifespan will be shorter. Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean that batteries will last 5 years. Average lifespan for such batteries is approx. 2-3 years and also depends on different handling factors – such as battery storage and maintenance (regular charging in the off season).
Can I buy two sets of batteries and use them alternately?
We understand that you would like to have your Q2 running all day and minimize the charging time, but for now, the batteries cannot be removed and replaced with new ones. Working with batteries demands a great deal of precaution, especially in a marine environment. The battery pack can however be replaced by your local Authorized Dealer/Distributor.
Are you working on external charging stations?
Yes. We do understand the significance of being able to replace the batteries, so we are already in the final stages of developing external charging stations and upgrading the battery packs, so that you will be able to take replace them in a short time – without losing to much time.
TRANSPORTATION
How do I transport the vessel?
Quadrofoil can be transported with a special trailer designed by us. It looks like a normal boat trailer, but it's modified to fit the hull of the Q2. Momentarily, the trailer fits only the hull, while foils and the engine have to be transported separately. The trailer is in compliance with Slovenian regulations. Please consult with your authorities to see if same regulations apply in your country. Our Design Team is already working on a special trailer which will have an integrated storage compartment for the foils and the engine (estimated availability date in end of 2017).
How do I launch the Quadrofoil?
Launching the Q2 is very simple and similar to the procedure used in any other watercraft. While the Q2 is firmly positioned on the trailer, one must mount the Q2's electric engine and all four hydrofoils – all hydrofoils and the engine must be in an upright position. The trailer can then be driven into the water using the boat ramp (slipway).

How deep should the water be?
When the foils and the electric motor are in the water (down position), the minimum depth must be above 1 m (3.3ft). Draft and minimum depth is reduced when the foils and the electric motor are in the upright position (min. 0.5 m i.e. approx. 1.76ft). Mentioned minimum depth must also be taken into consideration when launching and starting the Q2.
Can I lift the Q2 with a crane?
Yes, it is possible, but special instructions must be followed for safety purposes. The vessels comes equipped with special lifting (strong) points that are predesigned to match the 4-point lifting frame designed by Quadrofoil. The Q2 should never be lifted using other frames than those supplied or specified by Quadrofoil.
DRIVING THE Q2
Do I need special skills or knowledge?
If you have a valid boating license and experience with driving smaller boats, we would say no, since piloting the Q2 is simple. You do, however need common sense and should always keep in mind that Quadrofoil Q2 is not like any other boat. Before your first ride, you should carefully read the Quick Start Manual (provided with the Q2). Once you master the basic functions, progressively adjust you speed and turning angles since Q2's handling and turning abilities are exceptional and may catch you off guard.
Do I need a license?
License requirements are subject to local and national laws, so you should always check with your local authorities. We do, however, encourage all drivers to have a valid boating license and refresh knowledge of boating rules, laws and regulations.
Is it safe to drive the Q2?
Like any other watercraft, Quadrofoil is safe when operated responsibly – within its performance specifications and under appropriate environmental conditions. The driver should always be aware of not only his/hers skills and knowledge, but also of the external factors (waves, surrounding objects, water depth, weather etc.) and only operate the watercraft when conditions are safe.
What's special about the patented steering system?
Most hydrofoiling watercrafts have one big disadvantaged – limited maneuverability. We have designed a patented steering system that turns all four hydrofoils and the motor simultaneously. We therefore have 5 points for controlling the watercrafts, allowing turning without reducing speed or stability. The system really is revolutionary as it completely changes and expends the possibilities of driving with foils.
Where can I drive the Quadrofoil?
You should always follow your local or national regulations and Quadrofoil's boat design category (Category D – Inland or sheltered coastal waters), but in general, due to electric propulsion, the Q2 can be driven on lakes, rivers, seas and marine protected areas, whereas the minimum water depth must be above 1m (3.3ft). For a detailed explanation, please refer to the
Directive 2013/53/EU
.
How does it handle choppy waters?
Quadrofoil's hydrofoils "cut through” rough water while maintaining an almost horizontal line with minimum deviation – keep in mind that this applies only to driving with foils and as long as the height of the waves does not exceed 0.5 m (1.76ft). When you drive without the foils, Quadrofoil will behave like any other watercraft.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND PROCEDURES
What materials do you use?
In development and production of the Quadrofoil Q2 Electric we have used the latest technologies from the automotive, aviation, naval and aerospace industry. Hydrofoils are made from special aluminum alloys, while the hull is made from different types of GRP, keeping in mind special requirements of each structural part. All materials have been carefully selected to provide the highest quality, while maintaining low weight and high performance.
How do you lift the foils?
Quadrofoil is equipped with an electric system for raising and lowering the hydrofoils, which is controlled from a user-friendly interface on the steering wheel. The foils rotate for approx. 165° providing the driver and the passenger with more space when entering and exiting the watercraft.
How do I change the foils?
Foils must always be changed in pairs so proper optimization is established between the left and right hydrofoil. The changing process is quite simple, as the foils are mounted onto the axis and then safely secured with a cam lever (instructions/illustrations on how to change the foils will be provided).
How do I access basic functions?
Quadrofoil Q2 is equipped with an interactive color touch screen display with an easy-to-use interface. Here you can access all necessary information about the Q2 and the trip in real time and control the vessels basic functions, such as raising and lowering the hydrofoils.
How do I control the vessel?
The Q2 is controlled and operated from the steering wheel. It contains all basic functions and buttons that enable you to control the Q2's movement (such as acceleration and braking). By turning the steering wheel left and right, you simultaneously turn all four hydrofoils and the electric motor simultaneously and thus change the direction of movement.
Do you have any anti-theft features?
Yes. Quadrofoil's special Formula 1 inspired steering wheel is detachable and doubles as a unique key that unlocks and lets you start your Quadrofoil. Each steering wheel is customized (synchronized) to unlock and control only one watercraft. It is also secured with a PIN number a driver needs to enter before starting the watercraft.
Can I mount any other engines (petrol or electric)?
No. The Q2's can only work with our special Quadrofoil motor, which was constructed in regard to the design and performance characteristics. If you connect any other petrol or electric engine, you will not be able to start the Q2 and may severely damage internal electrical and mechanical components.
How do you mount the Q2's electric motor?
Mounting and mounting the electric motor is simple. The procedure is similar to mounting any other outboard motor. More or less, it's a simple three step procedure: placing the mounting bracket in the center of the Q2's transom, tightening the clamp screws and plugging in the connectors. Click
